Barbecue Policies in NYC Residential Buildings/Apartment Buildings
As per The NYC Fuel Gas Code §623 and the NYC Fire Code §307.5:
“For apartment buildings or other residential buildings (called “multiple dwellings” in the Multiple Dwelling Law), it’s illegal to store a standard backyard propane barbecue on a balcony, roof deck, roof, rear yard, or courtyard.

- Establish where all the nearest exits and stairwells are to your unit if applicable. Never take the elevator when evacuating a fire.
- Use extra caution in the winter and during the holiday season as these times of the year can be more hazardous due to extra heat sources and more use of ovens and fireplaces.
- Replace expired fire extinguishers in your home and make sure you have the correct type of fire extinguisher. There are different types of fire extinguishers for different kinds of fires.
- Do not leave stovetops and any open flames such as candles unattended. Additionally, opt for LED/battery-operated candles instead of flame-lit ones.
- Always remember to unplug appliances that produce heat, such as curling irons, hair straighteners, hot glue guns, ovens, clothing irons, etc.
- Remove lint from the dryer after every use to reduce this fire hazard risk.
- In the event of a fire, do not use the elevator, and evacuate the building immediately.
