13 Gym Etiquette & Safety Tips for Homeowners, Shareholders, and Residents

  1. Report Repairs to Management
Let management know if repairs are needed. Additionally, respect the gym facility and equipment so that all homeowners, shareholders, and residents can enjoy it. While wear and tear is inevitable in any space, you can do your part to help keep your community gym in great shape.
  1. Share Machines and Equipment with Neighbors
Avoid prolonged use of machines when the gym is busy so that everyone can get a chance to use them.
  1. Report Lost or Forgotten Items
If someone left their keys, articles of clothing, etc. in the gym, tell management or building staff.
  1. Bring Headphones to the Gym
Be considerate of others in the gym by wearing headphones while listening to music, podcasts, etc. Additionally, keep phone conversations to a minimum or take the call outside of the facility.
  1. Wear Proper Workout Attire
For your safety, always wear closed footwear (sneakers) and proper gym attire when using the gym in your co-op, condo, or HOA.
  1. Follow Gym Signup Procedures
Adhere to the gym’s signup policy, if applicable. This will help ensure that all who live in the community get an opportunity to use the amenity in the timeframe that they desire.
  2. Adhere to Guest Policies
Guest policies for gym facilities and common areas are generally created for security purposes but also to ensure that all residents can use their amenities.
  3. Supervision Required
Adhere to age restrictions at all times while using any gym facility. All underage individuals must be accompanied by an adult for their safety.
  4. Re-Rack Weights
Always re-rack weights to eliminate potential safety hazards. Additionally, this courtesy ensures that everyone who wishes to use the gym can find equipment easily.
  1. Follow Guidelines on Machines
If you are unsure how to use equipment, follow the guides on the machine prior to utilizing them. Also, keep your hands and feet clear of heavy weights and moving machinery.
  2. Observe Proper Hygiene
Wipe down all workout equipment after using it. Additionally, use proper hygiene prior to entering and using the gym facility in your co-op, condo, or HOA.
  1. Be Considerate When It Comes to Noise
Whether your gym is above or below someone’s unit, or near another common area like a card room, remember to keep noise down when possible. For example, slamming weights can be disruptive to your neighbors if they live above or below the common area.
  2. Dispose All Garbage Before Leaving the Gym
While your gym facility may be professionally maintained, cleaning staff may not be devoted to that common area. Therefore, please remember to clean up after yourself before you leave. This includes water bottles, paper towels, etc. When people fail to do their part in keeping their common areas clean, it could result in the need to hire cleaning staff, which can ultimately impact the operating budget of your community, and thus, your maintenance costs.

Respect Neighbors and Common Areas

Professionally managed communities will have staff to facilitate upkeep of common areas. However, every homeowner, shareholder, and resident can help preserve the quality of their amenities and prevent hazards. Following these gym etiquette and safety tips can help you and your neighbors maximize the benefit of having amenities like a gym in your community.
